“ Stumbled upon this restaurant by chance and ended up loving the food here. Even though their speciality is sushi, I highly recommend trying the Basil fried rice. It is an underrated dish and it's one of the best rice dishes that I've tried. The rock shrimp tempura is also amazing along with their sushi dishes. Service is good and friendly and ambiance is cozy. ”
“ Enjoyed a post birthday dinner and the ambiance here is a chill vibe. The food was overall good. Especially the chicken wings are a smash. The rolls were good especially the dragon roll and you can ask for extra crunch if needed, which I never knew. Our waitress was very helpful, nice and informative. I don't recommend the calamari, although the crispyness was on point, no flavor and not tender. Drinks were good (Ginger Old Fashioned, the bomb) and we had a good time post birthday celebration dinner. ”
“ After returning from a trip, I stopped by this restaurant with some friends for a quick bite. The prices were reasonable, and the sushi was impressively fresh. We tried a variety of rolls, the kani salad, and the shrimp tempura--all of which were delicious. The restaurant itself is cozy, with a charming bar area and a peaceful atmosphere, at least during our afternoon visit. It's an ideal spot for catching up with friends. The service was excellent, and the kitchen was quick to prepare our dishes. I definitely recommend giving it a try! ”
“ The chicken satay is amazing. It flaky white meat with the subtle fragrance of turmeric, laid on a bed of roasted vegetables and peanuts. The pork dumplings are a winner. They are made in-house and come with and addictive soy ginger sauce that will make you want to drink it on its own. Their menu leans towards the Thai cuisine, but they also serve sushi and other Japanese staples. The interior is sleek, and if you choose to eat onsite, lunchtime is pleasantly empty. I imagine it becomes crowded for dinner. The area is very hip with its bistros and hip brasserie, and it becomes lively in the evening.. this includes Amber for sure. ”
“ It was a truly "lucked out" situation for us - while in a rush to see a show on Barrow street on a Thursday evening, we parked in a nearby garage and didn't know what we would get in terms of food, so just tried our luck with this eatery. Although its Yelp reviews are not top-notch, we were more than satisfied with our experience. It was apparent that sushi is their main stay, but we decided to order two Thai dishes and a Chinese appetizer. The flavor and taste were authentic enough, and the portions were so generous that we had trouble finishing them. It was such good value! In hindsight, we could have skipped the steamed dumplings - I did find their wrappers a bit too thick, but that didn't chip away any of my delight. Service was prompt and attentive. The decor was also very tasteful, although the artfully arranged lights made taking photos of the food a bit tricky :-). ”
“ I came here on a rainy Saturday night to order sushi/sashimi platter for two to go before they closed for the night. My order was processed fairly quickly in spite of cutting it close to closing time. The sushi and sashimi were good but I've had better for the price point but then again this is place is a little bit more about the ambiance than those places. I was surprised that salad/miso soup were not included, which is usually complimentary when you order a platter type menu item at most places. While I did order my food to go, I would say the ambiance of the place has a cute date spot vibe to it with a little bar and a dimly lit dining area. It's not cozy enough for a date but not really big enough for a birthday party. It's also in an area of the West Village that is not as NYU entrenched as say like McDougal is. ”
“ I came to Amber with my partner for dinner because we were looking for some sushi in the West Village. We did not have a reservation but showed up at 6:45pm on a Saturday and were seated immediately (some groups after us had a little bit of a longer wait.) The place had a lively ambiance paired with decor that made it feel romantic and mysterious at the same time. Our waiter was incredibly nice and was very attentive of our table. My boyfriend got a beer which he enjoyed and I got a green tea cocktail. I asked the waiter what cocktail was not too sweet and he recommended this one-- his recommendation was truly on point! The cocktail was mostly tequila heavy with some of the bitter hints of green tea. It was only very mildly sweet so it was perfect in that regard. I don't think it was as balanced in flavor as I would have hoped and felt a little flat to me but at least it was not sweet! We both had some miso soup as an appetizer which was hot, comforting, and full of those umami flavors that warm the soul. For sushi, they have very good sushi set combo deals which are a little cheaper as opposed to ordering the rolls separately. My boyfriend and I shared a Classic Combo as well as the Spicy Combo, each was $17. This came with: Salmon Avocado Roll: very generous chunks of both salmon and avocado. This is my go-to at most sushi places in terms of cut roll and it did not disappoint. I liked their ratio of more fish to less rice since it made the rolls feel lighter. Enjoyed a lot! Eel and Cucumber Roll: I'm not a big fan of eel so my boyfriend ate most of this one. Combination of sweet and chewy eel along with refreshing cucumber pieces. Seemed a little more skimpy on the filling compared to the salmon one but still good. California Roll: another good execution of a classic that I like. Generous portion of imitation crab and also avocado. I was surprised they did not add cucumber since some places always do the California with crab+ cucumber + avocado. Spicy Tuna Roll: my favorite out of all the spicy ones! Very nice ratio of tuna to rice and also good spice level. The inside was well mixed together, smooth, and not chunky. Super good. Spicy Salmon Roll: also good! Spice level felt a little milder than the spicy tuna and for some reason also tasted a lot saltier. Generous salmon portion but I preferred the spicy tuna. Spicy Yellowtail and Chive Roll: very nice! I loved this one. Had a generous amount of yellowtail with chives inside and the "spicy" component was the aioli on top as opposed to having it mixed in. Really liked this idea in terms of presentation/ aesthetics as well as for flavor since it allowed for more of a gradient across each piece that I found very nice. Overall, this is a solid place for cheaper sushi in the West Village. It's not the best sushi I've had in NYC and the portions were kind of small. I would have given it 3 stars in isolation but, when factoring in other places around the West Village, I think this one offers a relaxed, and satisfying sit-down experience that will not cost too much money for people on a budget compared to other options in the area. Service was very good and the ambiance was also really nice. Would come back again! ”
“ I'd happened to be on Christopher Street in the village in NYC and wanted a quick yet delicious bite and drink. And I'd decided to dine at Amber West Village. From the outside the restaurant look and feel very welcoming. Inside of the restaurant was rather charming and had a homely feeling. They had stool table seatings from what I could see since I was in the bar section. As for the bar, it's rather cute with stools and a bit spacious. They also have a few big TV screens where you can watch a game. There were a few regulars I could tell as they were engaging throughly with the bartender. Oh my, the menu was fully overloaded with such diverse food and drink options. I'd heard this restaurant is known for its casual sushi. However, I'm not a sushi person so I'd decided to get Thai basil chicken fried rice and a white sangria. I was so surprised how quickly my food arrived. I so enjoyed my meal. My Thai basil chicken fried rice came with lots of boneless chicken. Haha! The flavor in my meal was beyond delicious as I could taste the fresh basil mixed in it. It's been a while since I had such delicious Thai basil chicken fried rice. My drink was served in a huge glass packed with ice and stiff white sangria. It'd hit the spot for sure. It's always nice to find a fine place to dine at in NYC with lots of food and drink options at most importantly an affordable price. Oh yeah, I'd like to point out that it's a great spot to meet a date or dine solo. Enjoy! ”
